How Your Hard Kids May Be Positively Changing You

by Ben Holden on February 25, 2021

I have three daughters, so I have seen first-hand how every child is different. They are good at different things, react differently to situations, and struggle in different areas. We are all unique.

In fact, I try to help engaged couples understand this. As they stand at the door of a lifelong marriage commitment, I want to prepare them for life together. And that isn't always easy. They are two very different people who grew up in different homes, experienced different things, and therefore approach some things differently.

Because not all kids are the same, some of them provide a greater challenge to their parents. This is a real struggle! We look at kids in other families and wonder why ours seem so difficult. Christine Gordon acknowledges this struggle and provides four ways that your "hard kids" are positively changing you.

Gordon writes:

"The next time you stand in the kitchen with a dysregulated child yelling at you, take a minute after the crisis has passed to breathe. Think about what you saw in your heart in that interaction. It may be that God will show you your sin and enable you to repent, allowing you to express greater compassion the next time. It may be that he will encourage you that he is already at work. Change may be slow. But God will use our children to make us more like Jesus."
