Making a Big God Personal

by Tanner Pinkerman on June 29, 2020

My five year old often talks about how big God is. He’ll make exclamations like, “God is bigger than the biggest dinosaur” or “God is bigger than all of these trucks put together.” I love the childlike faith of a big God who is stronger, smarter, louder, and ... well, bigger than everything.

At the same time, I want my kids to know how “small” God can be. I want them to see that he sees the little things. He’s aware of every thought we have, and he cares about our everyday lives. He is a God of details.

I recently read Acts 17:26-27 while studying the book Suffering: Gospel Hope When Life Doesn't Make Sense by Paul David Tripp. The scripture passage says:

And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “In him we live and move and have our being; as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are indeed his offspring’” (Acts 17:26-27 ESV).

Tripp goes on to explain:

Think of God as directly involved with the length of the life of everyone who has ever lived and the exact address of everyone who has ever walked the face of the earth! He is just that present and powerful!

What an amazing thought it is to realize that God can be so big and so personal at the same time. He knows us and loves us personally, and at the same time, he is in complete control of the universe.

As we daily rediscover the wonder of God, may we - with our kids - continually unpack how great and how intimate he is.
