    Matthew 4:1-11

Take about 45 minutes during your missional community gathering to discuss what God is teaching you and how he is leading you in light of the weekend sermon.

    Connecting:

    • Was there anything from the sermon you related to most?
    • What are some things Americans use to form their identity?
    • Have you been prone to use any of those to form your identity in the past?
    • Why do you think we are so inclined to use those things to form our identity?

Application: What you believe about yourself determines how you live your life

    Read Matthew 4:1-11

    • What are some of the things that Satan tempted Jesus with?
    • How are each of these temptations forms of different identities Jesus could have believed?
    • How is this similar to the way Adam and Eve were tempted?
    • Wes said, “most of the time you give into temptation either because you yourself or your situation as special or your situation as hopeless.” How have you found this to be true in your own life?
    • What are you choosing to believe about yourself at those times and what are some right things you should be believing instead?

Application: Don’t assume to “be human’ means “to sin” rather than to walk in obedience.

    Read 1 Peter 4:12-13

    • When are some times in our lives that we are most likely to face trials and temptations?
    • What are some of the resources we have that can help us in these times? What are some things you have utilized in the past?
    • How can you lean on each other in trials and temptations? What does the Christian community look like in this context? How is this different than a mentor or co-worker from the workplace?
    • How does knowing that Jesus was fully human in his temptation encourage you in your Christian walk?
