The Meaning of Love

We don't always mean what we say, and what we say doesn't always express what we mean.

  • I love jelly doughnuts.
  • I love my wife.

Are those loves the same?

When someone makes a marriage commitment and says, "I love you" it often means "I love me and I want you." Keeping marriage vows is difficult and everyone fails to some extent. What makes a marriage healthy is a commitment that's not based on the other person.

Ephesians 5 encourages a husband to love his wife as Jesus loves the church. Jesus' love is self-sacrificing and it's based on his ability to keep the covenant relationship. It's not based on conditions that we must meet.

Don't treat your marriage the same as your love for a jelly doughnut. Love selflessly and unconditionally. And that's possible because of Jesus' love.
