Can We Keep a Vow?

When Pastor Dan works with couples in premarital and marital counseling, he explains The Glorious Therefore. When we enter marriage, we make vows to each other that we will never be able to keep. How can that be? Covenants are serious agreements between two parties.

As we read in the Old Testament, God makes a covenant with Israel but only he keeps his promises. Israel is unfaithful. But God doesn't dissolve his covenant; he makes a new one. This covenant depends on God's ability alone, not ours. This covenant depends on Jesus' blood shed on the cross that brings forgiveness, truth and grace to all believers.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1 ESV).

This glorious therefore in Romans 8:1 means that Christ's love draws us to obedience. His Spirit is alive in us, giving us new life that makes keeping covenant possible - only through God's grace.
