Helping Your Child Navigate Culture

by Ben Holden on August 24, 2021

As parents we want to know what our kids are experiencing and interested in. We want to know what music they are listening to, what they are watching (or hoping to watch) on TV, or what the latest trends are. It can be difficult to keep up with culture as it changes and shifts just like it can be a challenge to keep up with our own kids as their likes, dislikes, and interests shift. But just because this isn't an easy task doesn't mean that we should shy away from it. On the contrary, we should lean in and put extra effort toward learning, engaging, and discussing.

The team at Axis.org provide six steps to help you as a parent with what they call Culture Translation. Spoiler Alert - they recommend a lot of prayer!

Don't let the overwhelming nature of learning about current trends and what is resonating with your kids stop you from doing your homework and caring for their heart. The team at Axis provides us with practical advice on how to tackle this challenge.

Axis writes:

"There’s no easy way to find out about everything your teen may be interested in, and you could spend a lot of time researching things that may not even be on their radar. It sounds obvious, but the best way to learn about what your teen is interested in is to just ask them! These conversations can be tricky, especially when you’re in the dark about what your teen is interested in or why they are interested in it."
