Link: How to Talk About George Floyd with Your Teen

by Ben Holden on June 11, 2020

George Floyd was killed by a Minneapolis police officer who put his knee into Floyd's neck for over 8 minutes. Citizens of Minneapolis and throughout the world were distraught by this injustice and cruelty, bringing to light the racial bias that still has a stronghold in our nation. And let there be no doubt about it: racial bias is sin!

There have been a lot of responses to this tragedy: peaceful protests, riots, killing, hateful speech, social media outcries, etc. Your teenager is most likely trying to make sense of all this, trying to figure out what and who to listen to, and wanting to know what action they can take.

Now, more than ever is the time for parents to talk to their teens about George Floyd's death and the topic of racism. The team at Axis.org has provided a great resource about how to talk with your teen about this subject as well as providing links to other resources for you to engage with alongside them.

From the post by Axis:

"You don’t need to have all the answers to have a conversation about this, just open up a dialogue and make sure your teen feels heard and valued in the discussion. We’d first encourage you to personally consider these questions, before beginning a discussion with your teen. The psalmist David asks God to search his heart and see if there is any offensive way in him. Before entering into such a difficult topic, taking time to have God speak to our hearts is paramount."
