Grandparenting Toward Faith

by Ben Holden on November 11, 2019

Grandparents, you have the opportunity to play a key role in the faith development of your grandchildren. There are all sorts of scenarios for the landscape in which this can play out. Some of you have daily interaction with your grandchildren. Others of you are separated by a large distance. Some of your grandchildren are living in homes with parents of faith and for others, you may be the only spiritual influence in their life.

Regardless of what the makeup of your relationship is with your grandchildren, you can play a significant role in them knowing and loving Jesus. At a recent conference that I attended, Cavin Harper shared a few simple points to challenge you in your role. I will state them simply here for you.

Watch yourself closely.

It is important to keep up the condition of your soul. You may have been around the block a time or two, but God is still working in you. Remember that you are being watched, so make sure to watch yourself as well.

Avoid being a casualty of “elderitis”.

It is important to keep up a connection and engagement with generations that are younger than yourself. A state of disconnection with other generations can result in a loss of influence and respect.

Stay in the game – the joy of the Lord is our strength.

You can be a good grandparent or you can be a gospel grandparent. Stay in the game when it comes to the spiritual influence of your grandchild. It is fun to give gifts, shower your love, and fill them up with candy. You also have the opportunity to strategically invest in their faith and understanding of Jesus.

At Berean, we are cheering you on! Thank you for the example you are setting for our younger generations. It not only has an impact on them but for future generations to come.
