How to Achieve Big Goals with Small Steps

by Dan Goldschmidt on August 03, 2020

For the past several months I have been working on getting into shape, this means losing weight, going for runs several times a week, and eating healthy. That is a big goal, especially for someone, like myself, who hasn’t really been in great shape the past few years.

Small Steps

I am happy to report that I have just about reached all my goals. Now I am not typically someone who likes to keep the world updated on my health goals. I only share this now to make a larger point about faith. As I have pursued the big goal of getting into shape, I have done it by taking a series of small steps. Not massive diets, or radical changes to what I eat; not going from sitting on my couch all today to immediately trying to run five miles, but small steps, each one taking me close to my goal in a healthy, habit-changing way.

Faith Goals

The same method can be used in discipling others, especially kids and students. Now don’t get me wrong, when it comes to faith it’s good to have goals! What parent or mentor doesn’t want to see their kid be highly knowledgeable on the Bible, exhibit behaviors and disciplines of a Christ follower, and proudly share the gospel with others? These are all great goals.

The focus here is the problem of how we respond to big goals. Many times, we either get intimidated by all the work we have to do and never truly start, or we get so excited about achieving the goal that we go too fast and flame out. We can’t let that happen with the faith of the next generation.

Making Progress

So, what is the solution? Small steps. It is okay to take it slow to slowly introduce more of God and the Bible over time. Because when you do, you make faith...

  • Accessible

  • Understandable

  • Fun

  • Habitual

  • Desirable

Slow Progress = Sustainable Change

It is okay to not reach big goals immediately. Stick to small steps daily that will change habits and hearts over time. I have spent months on small steps towards a big goal of better health, and I have built habits that are sustainable over the years. Do the same with faith. Take small steps to build habits that will build a sustainable faith for years to come.
