How To Talk With Your Kids About the Election

by Ben Holden on October 29, 2020

We are rapidly coming to the conclusion of another election cycle. This latest one seems extra contentious and volatile. No matter who you are voting for, I'm sure, like me, you are looking forward to seeing this season come to an end.

. But what about our kids? We might be engaging in the election process at a far deeper level than they are, but they are also seeing, hearing, and experiencing what is going on. How do we talk to our kids about the election and help them develop a healthy biblical view of this?

Katie Taylor of World Vision interviewed Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Valerie Kadera on this subject. And Kadera provides insight and ten tips on how to talk about this election with your kids, helping them to interact with it in a healthy, God-honoring way. I found these tips extremely helpful as we seek to help our children develop a biblical worldview.

Taylor writes:

"Raising kids is challenging, and the election season brings up a whole new array of questions for parents and caregivers. Thankfully, we can go to God with our questions and ask for grace when we don’t get it right. When we go to God with our struggles and questions, we remind ourselves that our trust is in him, no matter who’s on the ballot. And when young eyes are watching us, putting our trust in God — in word and action — may be more powerful than anything we could ever say."
