Pray Like a Preschooler

Do you ever find yourself struggling to pray? Maybe you don't always know how to pray or what to say? The truth is that we often make our prayers much more complicated than they need to be. At Berean Preschool, we keep our prayers simple. But no matter how small they may seem to us, God always wants to hear them. Maybe there are some lessons we can all learn about how to pray like a preschooler!

Please pray that my dad isn’t sick of pizza anymore because I want to have it for dinner.

Pray that I can reach the boogers in my nose because it makes me crabby when I can’t.

Pray that my brother stops crying so my mom can have some peace and quiet.

Pray for my grandpa because my grandma is going to Heaven soon.

Have you ever asked a preschooler how you can pray for them? Their answers will make you laugh, they will touch your heart, but mostly they will humble you with their simplicity. The Bible tells us:

When you pray, don’t babble on and on as the Gentiles do. They think their prayers are answered merely by repeating their words again and again. Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him (Matthew 6:7-8).

At Berean Preschool, we love to pray!

Coming alongside our preschoolers in prayer is just one of the many blessings we get to experience as we work with the kids. We teach them that prayer is a way to talk to God and that he always listens. Jeremiah 29:12 assures us: "Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

Not only does God hear the kids and their prayers, but WE hear them too. Our staff is intentional about building relationships with the children so that they feel loved, valued, accepted, and listened to. Praying for and with our students is an essential part of building trust.

Prayer starts each morning when we gather as a staff to pray for our class day, our preschoolers, and each other. We thank God for our building, facilities team, and partnership with Berean Baptist Church.

We like to keep our prayers simple - and so can you!

At Berean Preschool, we like to keep our prayers simple with the kids. Here are just three of the things that we love to do:

  • We pray with our students during the day using scripted prayers such as:

"Good morning, dear Jesus, this day is for you,
we ask you to bless all we think, say, and do.

  • We also pray situational prayers:

Jesus, we hear a siren, please protect the emergency workers and those they are going to help.

  • And of course, we offer praises when we see our prayers answered:

    Thank you, Jesus!

We are blessed to be able to pray for our students, and they amaze us over and over with the simplicity of their requests. It is a wonderful reminder that when we have requests to present to God, let us not make our prayers more complicated than they need to be . . . we can just talk to God by praying like a preschooler.

Listen to our preschoolers as they pray.
